Last week Park and Rec made huge strides in completing this course. I haven't seen them but have been told there are now 10 pads and possibly the rest going in next week. This is great news and just in time for the benefit in August.
Check out the pics of the slabs going in, they are in the photo section of this site.

Aggie Land Disc Golf Course Hamilton, AL
(Keith Spotts, thanks for emailing me this info. I put this on our forum, IN QUOTES, for all who might not get to see the article.)
| Quote: |
Holliday, Sanderson both glad disc golf isn’t a prerequisite for elected officials
Hamilton City Council members (from left) April Steele, Scotty Sanderson, and McDavid Franks, along with (far right) Hamilton Mayor Bobby Holliday, came out to toss the first official discs at the Aggie Land Disc Golf Course that weaves through the Nature Trail in Hamilton on Friday, July 18. The course, which has been open for approximately a month, is currently composed of 11 holes, with plans to add seven more in the near future for a complete 18-hole course. Steel and Franks were the only two who made good on their “put” attempts at hole number 11. See story and more photos on the sports page.
===========================
The founding fathers of Aggie Land Disc Golf Course
Everything has to start somewhere, and for the Aggie Land Disc Golf Course, that somewhere was with the trio of (from left) Hamilton resident and avid disc golfer Bryan Drewery, North Mississippi Medical Center - Hamilton dietitian for dialysis and course designer Keith Spotts, and Hamilton Park and Recreation Director Larry Armstrong.
Disc golf takes flight in Hamilton
By CHANCE WALTERS
Sports Editor
HAMILTON - Those of you who frequent Hamilton’s nature trail, be on your toes.
The Aggie Land Disc Golf Course is up and running and several members of the community, along with others from Florence, Amory, Miss., Huntsville, and Sulligent, just to name a few, are putting the course to the test on a daily basis.
The course weaves its way through the Hamilton walking trail and currently boasts 11 holes.
The story behind how the city came about getting the golf course is almost as interesting as watching Hamilton Mayor Bobby Holliday and several city council members toss a few discs at the official opening of the course on Friday, July 17.
Bryan Drewery, a Hamilton resident who is employed in Tupelo, Miss., with the Cockrell Banana Company, has been an avid disc golfer for the past four years.
When he’s not at work, you can find him on the softball field or playing disc golf.
“I started playing disc golf several years ago when a friend asked me to go with him and I’ve been playing since,” said Drewery.
Drewery plays softball at the Castle Fields in Hamilton and Hamilton Park and Recreation Department (HPRD) Director Larry Armstrong is the umpire for the games.
“One night last fall, after we finished playing, Larry walked back to my car with me and when I opened my trunk, he saw my bag with my discs in it and asked me what they were,” said Drewery
“He told me they were for disc golf,” said Armstrong. “I had never heard of it.”
Drewery mentioned that Hamilton should look into getting a course and Armstrong agreed to do so.
Now, slide a few miles south of the E.T. Sims Neighborhood Facilities Building, to North Mississippi Medical Center - Hamilton, where the hospital’s dietitian for dialysis, Keith Spotts, is meeting with patient Dean South.
The two are talking and Spotts tell his friend about the game of disc golf and that he should play. South agrees and the two head off to the nearest course in Winfield.
“We would play the nine-hole course in Winfield a couple of times a week, but I told Dean that he needed his own course,” said Spotts.
“Bryan had planted the seed with Larry and I made sure he didn’t forget about it,” said Spotts.
“He absolutely worried me to death about this disc golf course,” confirmed Armstrong.
By the time spring of this year rolled around, Armstrong had 11 disc golf baskets and just needed a place to put them.
Luckily for him and the City of Hamilton, Spotts had experience with designing disc golf courses, as he had mapped out the Panther Prowl Disc Golf Course in Amory, where he lives.
“I designed the course in Amory and it’s quite a bit more difficult than the one here in Hamilton,” said Potts, who is employed with Fresenius Medical Care and works in Aberdeen, Miss., and travels to Hamilton about twice a month.
“But the hill at the walking trail adds a different element to the course and makes a few of the holes really interesting.”
Potts, Armstrong, and Drewery hope to have the last seven holes of the course up by the end of the year, completing the 18-hole course.
“The last seven holes will head into the woods and we’ll have another water hazard to add to the course,” said Spotts.
Disc golf uses the same rules as regular golf, but adds an emphasis on exercise, as there are no carts used.
That, along with Hamilton’s course practically being located on the nature trail, provide residents and visitors with a unique opportunity for both fun and exercise.
“The sport of disc golf isn’t just about competition,” said Drewery.
“It’s fun to compete with your friends on the course, but it also promotes physical exercise with cardio and walking, but also has a mental aspect to it.
“There isn’t a lot to do as far as being active in Hamilton, but with this course, the city is giving everyone something to do,” said Drewery.
“Disc golf promotes sportsmanship and gives everyone the opportunity to get out of the house.”
According to Drewery, the average price for the discs range anywhere $9 to $22 dollars, depending on the grade of plastic.
“There are four types of discs,” said Drewery. “You have putters, mid-range, fairway drivers, and drivers.
“Some guys carry six discs and some have 26, but if you just want to try the sport out, all you need is a mid-range disc and a driver,” said Drewery.
Drewery noted that the discs can last up to six years or longer, depending on how many trees you hit.
Disc sales could potentially spike with the combination of new disc golfers in the city and the wooded area around the nature trail, but the HPRD has you covered, selling Innova Discs at the E.T. Sims, Jr. Neighborhood Facilities Building. These are known as the best in the sport.
“We have Innova Discs you can rent for two dollars each and discs you can purchase for $8, $12, and $14 each,” said Armstrong, who now plays the course several times a week.
Proceeds from the purchased and rented discs from the HPRD go into a fund for the upkeep of the course.
An assortment of disc golf bags and towels can be purchased from Drewery.
Out of the 11 holes currently set up at the course, five holes hold both amateur and pro pads.
“Naturally, the amateur pads will be the easier ones,” said Drewery. “The pro pads can be anywhere from 25-100 feet longer than the amateur ones.”
Potts has designed four of the remaining seven holes to have both pro and amateur pads.
If you’re not familiar with the sport of golf, don’t be alarmed.
“All of the holes here in Hamilton are par-three’s and you play the disc where it lands,” said Drewery.
“Everyone I have talked to about the sport mentions what a stress-reliever it is.
“Being in the outdoors and walking the course is very relaxing,” said Drewery.
With 2,962 courses in the country, the popularity of disc golf is on the rise.
Interested persons can check out the Professional Disc Golf Association at www.pdga.com and browse discs and other equipment at www.innovadiscs.com.
“I’m working on getting the Hamilton Disc Golf Association up and running and we’ll have a grand opening once the final 18 holes are completed,” said Drewery.
“I would like to have T-shirts made for the course and host tournaments for fundraisers.”
Drewery, Spotts, and Armstrong have put a lot of work into getting the course ready, but their work is not yet finished.
Hole markers will be needed for each of the 18 holes and local businesses will have the opportunity to sponsor the markers.
Any donations to the course will also be accepted.
The course has its own group on Yahoo and can be found by searching for “hamiltondga.”
Breaking in the course
After the elected officials had moved on, the foursome of (clockwise from top photo) Keith Spotts, Bryan Drewery, Russell Brewer, and Dean South took to the course for a few rounds of disc golf. Spotts finished the day two-under-par to top his fellow disc golfers.

Thanks for the kind words Joey. It has been a nice vacation from building Amory to have Park and Rec ready with funds and shovels in hand so to speak. They have also been good to let me be involved and do most of the initial design work. This course will not be really longer than most but the pro tees will add a much more technical aspect to the course that you might expect from a casual round. The temporary placement of the tees will also change prior to a permanent commitment as we allow the community time to get used to playing. It is a true work in progress as was Amory. With the Parks director and several of his staff members playing some it won't be long until it is finished. I promise you a much more challenging course, from the pros, when it is complete. Will get it up on DGCR soon. I have some pics to get up too.
Thanks for checking it out Joey.

Keith,
Great job on the course, thanks for the info. I will stop by the course from time to tome to check the progress. We go through there a lot.
Keep us posted as well. If help is needed this fall/winter let me know. Just curious, did we guess right on the distances? Will they add the course to Disc Golf Review?

| #5 will have a way out. There is going to be a hole in the woods to the right of the fairway. Walking track is not that heavy with traffic most of the time. The future holes will provide wooded technical shots and a pond. Work in progress for sure. |

7/4/09
Hunter played the course today with a couple of family relatives who live in nearby town of Hackleburg, I watched and limped around in a cast.
No score was kept since Hunter was playing with first time players showing them some techniques and things.
Right now the course is hard to navigate without signage or numbers on the baskets but we managed to find them all, I believe 11 baskets are in the ground.
Most tees are marked with large numbered pavers in the ground and yellow flags, but a couple of the flags have been mowed over and/or removed by kids?
A few separate pro pads scattered throughout the course and some tees are combined for pro and am. Not sure if the walking track will be considered OB or not?
Most of the am holes were guestimated to be around the 275' - 290' range. It winds its way through a clean fairly wooded park with a 5' walking trail intersecting throughout most of the holes. The single pro tees seemed to be around 300' (another guestimation).
#1 am is fairly straight and slightly open with a few trees, the pro tee slightly bends to the right where the trees will be more in play, walking track on the right and a ballfield fence on your left.
#2 am bends slightly uphill to the left (can't see from the tee), slightly wooded with a low ceiling.
#3 am/pro plays downhill with a bend to the right, near a walking track on the right underbrush and thick woods on the left.
#4 ( the most confusing for first timers) has a dogleg to the left after throwing over the creek and the basket is tucked in the edge of the weed/woods on your left (can't see the basket from the tee).
#5 is straight and really narrow at the basket end as you are throwing to a dead end fairway with weeds/kudzoo on both sides, you have to backtrack your way out, this probably will cause traffic jams when the course gets heavy play.
#6 is an open fairway shot that bends slightly to the left to the edge of some woods and weeds.
#7 throws across the creek again and through the woods and over the walking trail and over a couple of small ditches.
#8 pro (could not find the am) plays in the middle of the walking trails bends slightly to the left through a narrow fairway of trees, also parallel with the creek on the right.
#9 straight up hill with a couple of trees that come into play near the basket. (Our opinion this tee needs to be moved to the right about 10' and back about 20', this will bring the two large trees into play from the tee).
#10 seemed to be the longest and most difficult, throwing though several trees and over the walking trail again.
#11 plays uphill (not as much as #9) with a few trees that protects the basket.
Overall, a nice course, you shouldn't loose a disc but problems could arise as more players start playing and an increase of usage of the walking trails from the non players.
For those who have played around the setting seems similar in a few ways to Ballard Park in Tupelo and similar in a few ways to George Ward Park in B'ham.
I would play it again and looking forward to the completion of this course. The designers did a good job with the land they have.
Also P&R looks like they are doing their part on the mowing and upkeep. We did not see a single large limb on the ground. Even the creek and ditches were maintained so you could retrieve your disc. You will get wet if you throw in the creek, ankle deep in July.
Nice job Keith, Wayne and the Hamilton crew,

Yet another beautiful course coming to our area.
I have been working with the Park and Recreation Dept. of Hamilton, AL for almost a year and have finally recognized the dream for them. 10 of the 18 baskets have been installed and they are great. This course, when finished, will incorporate all sorts of classic dg elements. There is water, a crystal clear cold water creek; elevation-up and down a huge hill, maintained fairways, trees, wide open shots and coming in the fall there will be woods and even a small crystal clear pond in the woods. Park and Rec is doing all the course work so the course is on their schedule and they are covered up with mowing for a while. For now we can enjoy the 10 holes out there and tweak them as needed since the pads are temporary.
Thanks go out to Dean South for my motivation to get a course put in Hamilton, AL for you guys to play. Also to Wayne Durbin for helping me plot the holes and measuring and for your very important am player opinion. I tend to to make holes to hard for most ams, including myself. Thanks to Daniel Philley for helping me keep the pros tough but not impossible as I tend to want to do. This course will be one of the best around when it is done and when it has a club full of regulars to play it and maintain it.
I am going to try to get a rough map up online asap so it can be navigated. Hopefully after Monday they will have discs for sale in their park and rec office. Will put maps and directions up soon so it can be played. It may not be worth the drive yet but it will be soon.
Had the pleasure of meeting Drewdog from Hamilton, he plays a good bit in Tupelo. He is pumped about this course and is really excited to have it. I look forward to working with him and making this one of the best courses around.
If anyone has any questions about the course feel free to email me at ktel311@hotmail.com
